I never thought that I wanted to home school! Ask any one of my friends, and they will tell you that I was very adamant about not homeschooling. So how on earth did I get from not wanting to, to creating a blog about homeschooling my children?
I think it was a very gradual process and a lot of good influence around me. Out of all of my friends, there was only one other mama that wasn't going to homeschool (sorry B, lol). Every one else I knew homeschooled their children. I had many conversations with them and was still set in sending the girls to public school. Then the day came, last April, when I was supposed to sign Caroline up for Pre-K.
AHHHHHHHH! I couldnt' do it! I just kept thinking about how they were not going to teach the things that I thought were priorities!!!! I also had flash backs of when Caroline was briefly in dance and the other mothers were telling me which elementary schools to put her in to keep away from riffraff (we live in a very nice area, there is not really any riffraff around). I also saw the other (highschool) students around and was not impressed with how they acted or appeared to treat other people. I sat on the couch realizing that I didn't want to send them to that place!!!!
For a while now, I have been doing a lot of reading on child development. It was more for parenting and discipline research, but I have been learning a lot in regards to education as well. My best friend is an avid Montessori lover/follower and I have been fascinated with what she has done. So inadvertently I have been getting ready for homeschool.
I have found that I am more of a Waldorf type mama though. I really enjoy the imaginative play and block learning it implements. The only thing I don't like about it is I think that Rudloph Steiner is a nut job, when it comes to his opinion on the spirit world! I have been lucky to find some great Catholic, Waldorf-esque, Blogging, Moms to follow!
I plan on writing more about why I chose homeschooling tomorrow! Good Night friends!
